UK Customers Purchasing on EU Sites
The UK is no longer part of the EU customs union or VAT area. That means goods moving from the Republic of Ireland (EU) to Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales) are treated as imports, with customs rules applying.
Northern Ireland is different — it still follows some EU rules under the Northern Ireland Protocol
2. What charges can apply?
When goods arrive in the UK from Ireland, you may face:
a) Import VAT
- The standard UK VAT rate is 20%, though some goods (e.g. children’s clothes, books, food) may be zero-rated or reduced.
- Import VAT is calculated on the total value of the goods plus shipping costs and any customs duty.
b) Customs Duty
- This depends on the product type and value.
- For goods valued under £135, no customs duty is charged — but VAT usually still applies.
- For goods over £135, customs duty may be applied (rates vary depending on the product’s commodity code).
Example: clothing might have ~12% duty, electronics often 0%.
c) Handling/Clearance Fees
- Couriers like Royal Mail, DHL, UPS, FedEx, etc., usually add an admin fee for collecting customs charges.
- Royal Mail: ~£8
- Parcelforce: ~£12
- DHL/UPS/FedEx: ~£11–£15
3. When do you pay?
- If the Irish seller charges UK VAT at checkout (using the UK’s Import One Stop Shop system, IOSS), then goods under £135 should arrive with no extra charges.
- If VAT is not collected by the seller, then UK customs or the courier will ask you to pay import VAT + any duty + handling fee before delivery.
4. Northern Ireland exception
If the delivery address is in Northern Ireland, you don’t normally face customs charges when buying from Ireland (or anywhere in the EU), since NI remains in the EU single market for goods.
